New W hotel by Zaha Hadid Architects opens in Macau

The building mixes refined aesthetics and excellent energy efficiency standards and is located in the Studio City resort on the Chinese city-island. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled W Macau, one of two new hotels that will enrich the Hollywood-inspired resort “Studio City”, opened in 2015 in the Cotai district of Macau, an administrative division of China whose economy is based on tourism (casinos and gambling are a historic attraction on the Macau, often referred as “the Asian Las Vegas”).

W Macau, which is part of a second project phase of the area started in 2017 and rises for 40 floors with two elliptical towers, is inspired by the cinematography atmosphere of the resort and offers in a contemporary key the imaginative geometries and rich details of the Art Déco era. The facade features three different shades of glass, which contribute to giving an elegant dynamism to the towers that compose the building.

But beyond aesthetic and formal care, the project pays great attention to sustainability and energy efficiency. Its shape, in fact, is mainly designed to reduce overheating and glare, achieving high standards of thermal comfort. Furthermore, the orientation and configuration of the towers were designed to improve natural ventilation inside and around the structure.

In addition to the 557 rooms and suites, the hotel houses bars, restaurants, a swimming pool, a spa, a gym, and even a recording studio.
